Welcome to Mrs Murphy’s Fourth Grade ELA Class

The students have been off to a wonderful start of school. We began the year with the question, “What do good readers look like?”

The students and I then began creating a Reading Salad. For more information about that you can ask your students. We have discussed what it means to be a metacognitive reader. Metacognitive is the first vocabulary word we will learn this year. From here on out, our students will be expected to be active readers.

We have also been discussing our Reading Rotations. These rotations will center around the word R.E.A.D. Students will be Reading on Their Own, using Eyes and Ears, working At Their Seats and Discussing with Groups.

I am very proud of the deep thinking that I have been seeing already this year. We are looking forward to thinking even more deeply and becoming more metacognitive readers.

Please be on the lookout for our weekly reading log homework. A log will be assigned every Monday. Students will be expected to read at least 20 minutes each night and respond to a comprehension question, 5 comprehension questions in all. This log will need to be signed and brought back to school the following Monday.

Please encourage your child to read every night and to respond to the questions on our log. As the year progresses this log may also be completed on the computer/iPad. More information about that will be forthcoming. Please see the graph below for more information

about why students truly need to read at home each night.
