Schema, Inferences and Evidence! Oh My!

Determining character traits based on schema and inferences:

The members of room 204 wrote an essay identifying appropriate character traits for their favorite character in Tuck Everlasting. After selecting the five most fitting character traits for their character, each student had to find evidence in the text to support each character trait. In order to do so, students had to infer using their own schema (or background knowledge). Next, they began to write an essay showcasing their findings. While writing their essays students practiced the following skills:

  • Introductions

  • Hooks

  • Topic Sentences

  • Correctly citing evidence

  • Explaining their evidence

  • Explaining their schema

  • Explaining their inferences

  • Conclusions

  • Grammar

  • Spelling

  • Punctuation

  • Using salsa words (not dead words!)
